I don't understand why having subgroups would put pressure on people to pick a subgroup.
I also don't see why we even have to have official subgroups at all. To me the strider/whisperer/wolf pack titles are there to help with understanding.
For example, I know I am going to focus on herbalism and nature magic. Whisperer is fairly close to what my character concept represents. I have chosen to apply that title so that when someone sees my character they don't have to ask "Hey what do you do". Instead they can see I am a Whisperer of Wood and already have a general idea of "oh, he must be an outdoor guy that focuses on nature related tasks".
If a specific title had not fit my character then I would not have felt the need to choose one that is the closest just for the sake of belonging to one.
In fact, that could even change once the game starts and we actually see how the skills line up. Maybe trying to have animal companions, do herbalism, and learn magic will not be practical. If I drop animal and plant specific related skills am I really a "whisperer" anymore? Maybe it would be more appropriate to call myself a sage or something of that nature.
If the majority think having a highly structured sub-ring group is best then I don't mind doing my part, this is a democratic process. I just don't personally see why there is a need to do.

I don't understand why having subgroups would put pressure on people to pick a subgroup. It is kind of human nature. He are social animals that naturally form hierarchies for everything we do. Humans thrive on being able to claim inclusion in social groups and build many relationships bonding over those groups. Merely by providing groups we trigger that subconscious need to want to belong. That doesn't mean we can't consciously decide we don't need to belong to a sub-group. It just means that there is a subconscious trigger under the surface.
