It is interesting that Ryan has stated that CCs are equivalent to EVE fleets and the current preferred limit for Chartered Companies is 20 members though he seems prepared to crowd forge the precise number, possibly as large as 40 or 60.
I am curious how people envisage the Keepers will go about forming these small CCs. Some possibilities:
- settlement members just form their own CCs as they see fit
- the CCs are formed from within one ring
- the CCS are balanced with equal members from each ring
- (my preference) the CCs are formed for a purpose, you join a "exploring CC" or "trading CC" and members are allocated to the CCS as appropriate
thoughts ?

Why he didn't include a number is a bit, weird, but hopefully they will drag a figure out of him within the next day or so. If so ill post it here. The number 20 seems real low to me though.

20 does seem low for a Chartered Company, or at least how I would see one. Though as far as forming smaller groups I agree withclannagh, by purpose makes the most sense to me.

My current hunch is the limit of 20 was designed to limit the sized bands that could adventure together.
Hence caravans, bandit bands accosting those caravans etc would tend to be under 20.
From what Ryan is saying a group like Keepers of the Circle is actually meant to be a settlement level organization.

This is the way I see this working.
I see the Keepers of the Circle as a Settlement. I dislike using the word Guild because it doesn't really apply in the traditional MMO sense... and shouldn't.
A Chartered Company backed by the Keepers of the Circle may be the Striders (scouts), or Hroderich's Lions (army), or Erian's Market of Wonders (merchant), or Drake's Mining Company Et. Al. (resource gathering)...
The Rings will be things we have organized but not mechanically supported by the game other than possibly the Inner Circle (at least) and the Wardens (at most) as a governing body of the settlement. (EDIT) Of course we don't know the mechanics of a Settlement. We don't know how specific we can get with creating different levels of voting rights in-game. The more we can allow in-game the less "meta" we have to get by using our website for political things.
Each time someone wants to create a Chartered Company that would be backed by our settlement, they have to talk to the leadership of the Rings they intend to have involved with the Company.
Hroderich would have to talk to the Ring of Steel, Crystal, Shadow, Light and Wood to create his Lions because those would be the most likely Rings involved in an Army. Erian would have to talk to Iron, Gold and Earth (maybe Crystal, Light and Wood) to create his Market of Wonders...

Is a member of our Settlement automatically a Keeper of the Circle?
Can only Keepers of the Circle be leaders of the Settlement?

Other questions I have... Is a member of our Settlement automatically a Keeper of the Circle? Can only Keepers of the Circle be leaders of the Settlement? Or should new members of the settlement be initially issued the equivalent of a residence visa or work permit and be allowed, once they have proved themselves to be of value and not a spy, to join the keepers ? |

Chartered Companies may be best formed on a time-zone/time-available basis.

If you can belong to multiple CCs I can see a limit of 20 possibly working. We could do this as Gintigael said, by making CCs the equivilant of Rings or sections within a Ring. Voting would have to be done via the website except for what falls within the Settlement Mechanics. I doubt that they intend CCs to be limited to 20 people though. If they do, I hople they allow us to either "link" CCs to form a larger group or "Alliance" of CCs or give some other mechanics for having a comunity of over 20 players be able to coordinate and communicate easily.

Drake - Honestly, I don't want to see a system where we can communicate long distances, unless its a spell like 'message' or passenger pigeons (which shouldn't be instantaneous). A message system in game is very 'meta' and makes if feel more like EQ than Skyrim. In fact, there could be a Chartered Company devoted to message sending like the Pony Express.
I understand that it would make things much easier to coordinate our actions, but before the telegraph there was no way to have instant communication, so I'd rather not see it. There will probably be some kind of system though. People are too used to it in these kind of games.
Clan - I'm sure that our CCs will end up being organized that way. It doesn't make sense to be in a group of people that aren't online when you are.

"Long distance" communications on an OOC level is going to be a fact of the game. Whether it's supported by in-game chat, or external applications(Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Google Chat, etc), people will use them. Leaving them out of the game is just going to frustrate people who don't want to have to install third party software to be in the loop.

It is kind of sad that there will be that meta bit going on. Though, unless there's some cool in game explanation for long range communication amongst everyone, it might certainly help with that feel. I have to admit, I'm one of those people that goes crazy when people at the gaming table discuss things that are clearly out of character about what they are planning/doing in game. Not that I say anything, but it does throw off the feel for my character.

I think there can be a place for it. Often times I'll be playing a character in a group that's been adventuring together for years, but I just met the players a month or two ago. I think a limited amount of ooc discussion can help preserve the feel that the characters have been working together long enough to have some tactics, and to understand one another. But yes, I think having a lengthy, detailed discussion mid-combat is out of place.

@dario: I do agree with that, small chatter is good for the cohesiveness, as well as a bit of the fun of just gaming in general. Same goes with a bit of completely out of character non-game related things. Small is good, too long and it throws the game off - at least for me.
