In every game I've played there's a group of assassins/thieves/rogues in general who are just badass, and that's pretty much the Ring of Shadow. But they all have something cool they say to each other, like the thieves guild in ES: Oblivion says "Shadow hide you", and i want that. So post idea's for a badass motto here.

Challenge: In blackest day, in brightest night... Response: Beware your fears made into light.

I don't really have anything creative to add, but I really love the idea of a challenge and response. The uninitiated could just repeat the initial phrase back to you and you would know they aren't really one of you, but they wouldn't know that they did it wrong necessarily. You know?
Not being a member of the Ring of Shadow I obviously won't know you guys have an awesome phrase, but I think it is a really great idea.

More seriously:
"Death waits in the dark." or some iteration thereof (shamelessly stolen from the 160th Night Stalkers).
Anything: Anytime, Anywhere.
Silence Keep You.
Challenge: When you move Response: Fall like lightning (Sun Tzu reference) Farewell: Fall like Lightning.
Make the Impossible Invisible.

Challenge/Response goes to military applications. Personally, what immediately came to mind was "Ten Times the Black Sword" "The Bull Bleeds Deeply" <- Reference (made up, I think) in Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles by initiates of Mithras to identify one another before fighting. If your opponent was also an initiate, he was accorded certain privileges - ensuring he was looked after if he lost, a clean death, etc.

I agree on having a saying. I will have to think on this a bit to find something to toss into the ring.
Ideas thus far:
Silence in the night May the shadows be

well i'm basing alot of what the RoS inner structure, as long as it's approved, like my fraternity. Pledges, aka the uninitiated, won't know the challenge and response I believe in saving that for the actives. I like the idea of incorporating Shadow into the challenge/response. It'll probably be decided in secret

Challenge:
"Where does fate lead you?"
Response:
"Beyond the sight of man."

Certainly makes sense to have that be decided in secret.

Also, one night's worth in in-game ale to the first person who (without cheating) gets the reference in my first post on this thread.

One free night's worth of booze for you, ser. I figured they fit the Shadow better than the GLC.
