When I said black market, it was with the mindset of the subversive smuggling ring, and not the organ trading/necromantic relic black market side of things. We will be a NG society after all. We would need a medium to take action when the covert is needed rather than the overt, like if we are smuggling food and weapons into an occupied territory to aid freedom fighters against tyranny and some such. Plus, there's going to be gray and black markets out there anyway and it's better for us to have one already established here so that foreign elements don't come in and establish theirs. We don't have to cater to the people with evil intentions and requests for items but we can do business with the seedier elements who aren't evil.

me and hrod had a similar discussion close to this topic the other night, i was going over some things about the Doctrine of Shadow with him (its almost done SQUEEEE). The Ring of Shadow will be pretty much what ya'll have mentioned. To quote the Boondock Saints, "We're alot like 7/11. We may not always be doing business, but we're always open."
we're essentially gonna make up the black ops/covert section of the ring. Assassinations won't be something simply posted in the Bounty Board, but will be something given to a member by the Guardian. Thieves will be working constantly on bringing income into our guild as well as keeping our enemies from getting their own funds. Spies will be working left, right, and center getting contacts and causing problems.
We will be working closely with every Ring but our main partners will be Gold, Wood, and Earth' money navigation and supplies

I'm not certain if Karter is working on the Doctrine of Shadow or not, either way here are a couple more things to chew on.
Like many of the other Rings there will need to probably be some separation within the Ring of Shadow for different types of roles that people will play within the organization. I'm always a fan of 3s and see 3 main sub categories within Shadow. These are general ideas, (1) Assassins (2) Spies (3) Thieves. Each of these groups would have primary and secondary/tertiary duties.
(1) Assassins/Blades - Sanctioned and Targeted removal of Circle adversaries or contracted targets. (2) Thieves/Shades - Recovery and acquisition of goods. (3) Spies/The Hidden - Infiltration of outside organizations for the gathering of information.
Thoughts?

I am in agreement with this, Lor. Breaking it up into 3s covers all of the major precepts of Shadow. For the names I was thinking naming them as extensions of the shadow as if it were alive.
Blades - I like this name for the Assassins. Thieves - Hands, Maybe? To illustrate the fact that they are going out and plucking what the Circle needs to fund our endeavors and recover what has been taken from us. Spies - Eyes. They are the eyes within shadow, seeing all without being seen.

I also like the set of three and it seems to encompass what we would be doing fairly well, and allows for dabbling in the other parts when you have down time in your primary. I echo doomcrow that Blades is a good name for Assassins.

I like the idea of Blades, Hands and Eyes as well and would be totally for it.

I wouldn't call it a black market, think of it more as a wholesale discounted transaction

"Oh you're trying to stop some bandits? Well, this set of armor just happened to fall of the back of a caravan this morning. Where'd I find it? On the side of the road of course. Now you could go to the next town and buy it, but since you're here and you really need it I'll give it to you for a discount."

Be careful you don't cut into Gold and Iron's profits with too many wholesale discounted transactions. You need stuff from us, too.

The point of the Black Market is that transactions aren't exactly announced or made known beyond the buyer and seller.

Gintigael Gemweaver. It's certainly a concern we will keep in mind since we want to support not undermine the other rings, just as the other rings will want to do the same to each other.

Be careful Ring of Shadow. Secrets/infiltration and needed, but don't turn them around on other members of the Guild. I think having a black market is only good in Settlements that we are not allowed in because of our NG nature. If you start selling things on the cheap to places that we are allowed in then you undermine Gold and Iron.

Iron has the ability to manufacture goods. Gold will have elaborate systems or inventory, storage, and flow of goods from here to there. They will have the selection, the location, and the manpower to sell whatever goods come into their possession.
Shadow will most likely not maintain these kinds of things. There probably won't be any 'Shadow One Stop' for people to come buy things on the cheap. Shadow has no ability to create goods that Iron can make and sell them cheaper. The frequency of sales from such a Black (or Gray market, if it makes you feel more comfortable) Market would be comparatively so much less than the Gold markets that it's not going to put a dent in anybody's sales.
I believe Karter is talking about the acquisition of goods 'acquired' from various sources, be them bandits, offending aggressors, or wherever there are goods to be stolen from bad guys and then either resold to their rivals (perhaps), or sold to our allies or passerby travelers/merchants for cheaper than the going rate. Or even stored in hidden caches or given to other Rings for them to store in their facilities or to bolster them should they need such items.
