I thought about posting this in the Ring of Steel section, but after thought it seemed to me that our military will be important to every Ring, although Earth, Iron and Gold to a lesser degree. Our army will fail without magic (arcane and divine) to back it up and it will get blind-sided without the sharp eyes of Wood and we can have the advantage with sabotages of Shadow. This game is attempting to be very intricate as far as character interaction. I have heard talk between various Guilds, like Steel and Light here, about talking about our various forms of military. I see a variety of military operations Protection - caravans, diplomatic missions, foraging/mining missions Defense - defending the settlement and surrounding land from PCs or MOBs Attack - taking the fight to aggressive settlements/groups/NPC clans Adventuring - parties searching dungeons and wilderness areas I'm sure there's more, but that's what I have so far. Each of these will need different tactics. Do we want to start to make a list of military operations and who might be best to head them? Do we think this thread needs to go somewhere else? Am I being too forward posting this since I'm not in a martial Ring?

I don't think that there's anything wrong with you wanting to discuss this Gin. I think that as more detailed information about mass combat is revealed the role of mass combat will fall into place.

put me down for a big yes!!! that is i would love to be a part of missions. many of them. i love to adventure and i love to figbt. whether its guarding a caravan, a minjng operation, resource gathering expedition, dungeon stomping, crypt delving, rujns exploring, or giving protection to our dignitaries and diplomats or lore seekers- sign me up. since i do have wanderlust i would definately prefer that to guarding a settlement.
im considering my backup character to be a shadow member or explorer since i have the crowdforger package they both should advance simultaneously. regardless she will be a keeper for sure. youve got my loyalty and interest for any and all of my characters and those of my family and friends

Am I being too forward posting this since I'm not in a martial Ring? I don't think so. As you said operations will be a mixture of many, if not all, of the rings. I'm hoping that once GW gets the Kickstarter stuff settled that they will start filling us in on their plans for things like mass combat, PvE, resources etc.. That'll let us be able to better know how we need to plan. But no reason we can't use what we know now to get ideas down in writing.

As far as WAR! goes, I think it is just as important, if not more so to focus on defensive capabilities of whatever settlement we intend on placing BEFORE we try invest into a standing army.
I may just have a old mans mentality but I see things being much worse for our Charter should we fail to defend ourself against invading Orcs, Bandits, or worse, other Player Alliances. In this regard I believe the diplomatic venue is our safest bet, at least initially we can find common cause with some of our like-minded neighbors to agree to some terms where we may come to each others aid in the event of siege.

I agree, Carbon. I know the Ring of Light will take a powerful stance on the defense of our settlement and will actively seek to protect it and our members in any way possible. Hrod seemed pretty motivated to do the same with Steel, but I like your initial assessment; initially, we should focus on defense with some foraging activities in order to expand our resource pool and territory. Once we become established, then we can implement a more rapid expansion.

One of the Ring of Iron's first objectives is to make sure that Circle members have all the defensive tools, weapons and armor they need to protect our operations. I like to imagine that the Ring of Iron will work more on defensive armaments as opposed to offensive ones... but who know what kind of Crafters we will end up with.
