I threw my vote behind pets because what self-respecting Giver of Gold doesn't have hounds in his Hall?
More seriously though, so many members of this group so far are aiming for an animal companion/familiar class, it's best to give them those options early. I imagine that's something that will need a lot of tweaking, which is what EE is all about, right?

There is an interesting new post asking for all core races to be an option in that list. So instead of pets, more gods, or mounts, they would put a priority on halflings, half-orcs, and half-elves. This isn't official by any means, but I would certainly be in favor of it. Animal companions and familiars can be added later. I personally would really really really want to start with them, but i can recognize about what people have stated of them easily being added to the skill tree even after a few months have gone by. Race on the other hand isn't so easily just changed part way through being your character. I would much rather get to see my friends be themselves from day one and bond with Baern later. You can add your voice here if you think it is something you would like to show support for as well.

I'm biased, but I would absolutely rather have the core races available from the start. On the other hand, I'd hate to make a character concept unplayable for an amount of time - beastmaster, a wizard who relies on his familiar, a hunter with her falcon, etc - and that might still nab my vote.

I do feel like the community as a whole will benefit more from a more detailed explanation by what they mean by priority for development.
They have stated that EE is not going to be like your average "beta testing" period. But are we voting on what will and won't be finished by EE?

When they said it won't be "normal beta testing" they meant that they don't plan it to be a bug hunt, but rather a features test. The game will *not* be complete at EE, and if my guess is half right, will not have everything they want at OE release either.
A note for the "get all the core races in first" comments, though. The team has different people on each subsystem. Adding races is an extremely art resource intensive process (assuming you want some degree of customization in how your character looks). Pets are a whole separate team doing a different type of development (AI, UI for commands, etc). Yes, there's some overlap, but it's not like you can assign all of Goblinworks to a task and speed it up.

With that being the case, it might make more sense to leverage more time getting the races hammered out with development already going in that direction for the first crowdforging vote - but it does kind of invalidate the vote, doesn't it?

Generally, it means it's more efficient to do similar tasks in series, rather than parallel.
Look at it this way. I have 20 UI guys, 20 Systems guys, and 20 Art guys.
Task one, races. Each Race will take 15 art guys, 2 UI guys (to handle chargen), and 2 systems guys (for chargen and racial traits).
Ok, they're working on that. Now I've got 5 Art guys, 18 UI guys, and 18 Systems guys. What can I work on with this loadout. Well, Pets will require 4 art guys to do the models, 5 UI guys to do the controls for the pets, and 15 Systems guys to handle building the AI, control commands, pathing, and combat mechanics.
Ok, now I've got 1 art guy, 13 UI guys, and 3 Systems guys. ok, well, they can start working on inventory management.
I couldn't just do three races in parallel, I don't have enough art guys for it, and it leaves the systems and ui guys sitting around bored.

Kind of, but halfling lost by 4 votes, and not even 2k people voted compared to the what 7k backers? I feel like a lot of the people who joined in at the end didn't know the poll was there.

Well, we picked up over a thousand backers the last day, and the poll closed when the kickstarter did. So a lot of them probably didn't vote.

The poll closed before the Kickstarter ended actually. They sent out the update declaring Gnomes the winners before the end.

Heh, I was so busy mashing F5 that day it all sort of blurs together.

Although, a Paladin with a horse that he/she never rides would be hilarious! Who says it has to be a horse?

I tried following the first link and it just shunted me to a general discussion area. Is it supposed to take me to the specific poll thread?

They temporarily suspended the second vote.
