Note - I wasn't sure if this belonged here or on your Role Play forum, but since what I'm writing isn't in-character, I thought I'd put it here.
Dear Keepers,
As a prospective Guide in PFO, one of the things I foresee helping new players with is role-play. I created the list below for a friend new to role-play to help her better visualize her character's personality. I thought even experienced role-players might find this a fun RP exercise. If nothing else, it provides something PFO-ish to do while we wait. Copying and pasting the list, then answering in another font color might be the best way to approach it.
Directions:
1. Answer the following as your character would answer. There is no "correct" answer - only the one that your character would genuinely give. The hope is that your answers will provide you, the player, with a better perspective on your character's actions and allow you to more naturally role-play your character. Saying why you are answering as you do would likewise be helpful. It may also provide your friends with a better perspective on your character.
2. Too often, RP surveys for determining alignment and the like are provided in multiple choice format. However, these choices are often too limiting and may not even include the action your character would naturally take. This is why these questions are open-ended, so that you can decide your character's natural reaction. You can answer as explicitly as you like, or even conditionally (e.g. I would do this, but if I found this out, then I would do that, etc.).
RP Questions:
1. You are out hunting for a much needed meal. You enter a small clearing and spy a deer. The deer is a female and this is the season for birthing fawns, but you cannot tell from this distance if she is a nursing mother or not. What would your character do?
2. You are in a busy town intersection and stumble across a coin purse. Upon inspection, it has not only coins, but cut gems inside. What would your character do?
3. You spy one of your settlement associates (someone you know well but less than a good friend) speaking in the shadows of his shop to another person. As you watch, the second person quickly makes for the settlement wall, climbs it, and disappears into the neighboring forest. You recognize the man as someone who has been banned from your settlement. This associate is of good standing in the settlement and has a wife and two children. What would your character do?
4. Your settlement leader has approached you in secret with concerns about another settlement member who he believes may be a spy. The person in question turns out to be a close friend of yours. The settlement leader asks you to keep an eye on him, report anything suspicious, and not to mention any of this conversation to your friend. What would your character do?
5. On a recent escalation raid, you recovered a small crystal sphere. Thinking it to be harmless but attractive, you take it home and leave it on the small table beside your bed. As you begin to drift off to sleep, you hear a voice in your head. "You and yours were not as thorough as you think," it says. "I endure and I will reward you handsomely if you return that crystal to me." When you open your eyes, you see a fading light emanating from the crystal. What would your character do?
6. You and a fellow settlement member were out patrolling. A party of Orcs ambushed the two of you. You managed to kill several and flee into the woods, but your companion is badly wounded. The settlement is a decent distance away, your friend is at least your size, and the Orcs are closing in. What would your character do?
7. You have spent twenty minutes clearing the monsters out of an area, single handed, with the intention of setting up a harvesting camp. After killing the last monster, you return to the spot where the harvesting camp can be erected, only to find someone else has planted their harvesting camp in the same spot. What would your character do?
8. You are searching the settlement market for a new item that you need. You see the item for sale by several merchants. One is a member of your settlement and one is a guest with permission to use the settlement market. The settlement member's price is double that of the guest. What would your character do?
9. You are on patrol and see a man being accosted by bandits. He is still alive, but it is clear he has been beaten into submission and is lying prone and helpless on the ground. The bandits are picking through his pack. You are certain you can handle the bandits, but as you look closer, you can tell that their victim is a member of a settlement that you are at war with currently. What would your character do?
10. It's time to begin training a new skill. Your settlement is short on < enter a skill you normally wouldn't think of training >, but you could also start the next tier of your favorite skill. What would your character do?

Gintigael's answers, written in a stylistic elven hand. RP Questions: 1. You are out hunting for a much needed meal. You enter a small clearing and spy a deer. The deer is a female and this is the season for birthing fawns, but you cannot tell from this distance if she is a nursing mother or not. What would your character do? What am I doing in the woods? Its so filthy out here. A doe? A fawn? Let them be, I'm going back to town.2. You are in a busy town intersection and stumble across a coin purse. Upon inspection, it has not only coins, but cut gems inside. What would your character do? What are the laws of the city I am in? Is there anyone in the area looking around for a lost object? If there's no one in the intersection then I'm within my rights to keep it... and turn the gems into beautiful jewelry.3. I would let my fellow Guardians know about what I saw. The associate would be questioned and a hunt for the banned man would happen.4. I would report what I find to the leader. I would hope that a close friend of mine would not work against my settlement, and if they do I will have to reevaluate our relationship.5. I would attempt to find out what the crystal does and how powerful is it. It may end up being a wonderful component in my next magic item.6. You and a fellow settlement member were out patrolling. A party of Orcs ambushed the two of you. You managed to kill several and flee into the woods, but your companion is badly wounded. The settlement is a decent distance away, your friend is at least your size, and the Orcs are closing in. What would your character do? Why am I patrolling? This is not my idiom. First I'm hunting in the forest, now I'm on patrol. Where's the Circle of Steel when we need it. I use what magic I can to fend off the orcs enough for my companion and I to flee from the orcs. I would also use my message spell to call out to my fellow Keepers for help.7. You have spent twenty minutes clearing the monsters out of an area, single handed, with the intention of setting up a harvesting camp. After killing the last monster, you return to the spot where the harvesting camp can be erected, only to find someone else has planted their harvesting camp in the same spot. What would your character do? Son-of-a-hobgoblin, if I get my hands dirty I expect returns on my investment. I bring down my rage and call upon the arcane forces to destroy this infiltrator's camp and drive them away.8. You are searching the settlement market for a new item that you need. You see the item for sale by several merchants. One is a member of your settlement and one is a guest with permission to use the settlement market. The settlement member's price is double that of the guest. What would your character do? I would examine the quality of each gem (I am looking for a specific gem to set in a particularly special brooch for my Guardian), and find that the quality is relatively equal. I would speak to my Settlement member and let him know about the price discrepancy, he will not bring the price down significantly. Since this is a gift and I cannot mark my price up for a more expensive product then I am forced to purchase from the cheaper guest. I do so with a heavy heart.9. I guess I have to patrol every once in a while. What else can I do while my assistants are finishing up my newest magic wand. Sigh. I guess I'll have to have a warm bath afterward... onto the story... I am on patrol and am supposed to defend those in our land from bandits and other monsters. I would fend off the bandits and save this person. I would then look through his pack to see if he was spying on our settlement and question him when he wakes.10. It's time to begin training a new skill. Your settlement is short on < enter a skill you normally wouldn't think of training >, but you could also start the next tier of your favorite skill. What would your character do? I would serve the settlement best by being the best Jeweler and Magic Crafter that I can be. Why would I work on my baking skill? ((Thank you Hobs for bringing this here. I love doing these sort of exercises with my characters.))
Answered by Falita Answered by Nadya
1. You are out hunting for a much needed meal. You enter a small clearing and spy a deer. The deer is a female and this is the season for birthing fawns, but you cannot tell from this distance if she is a nursing mother or not. What would your character do?
A deer, so that is what this strange looking camel is? I'm not often the one who hunts, but I would move on to the next thing to eat. I would rather not deprive a youth from its mother.
Life can't continue if you take away the mother. I will leave her be, even if that means going longer without food. There are plenty of things the forest has to offer in the way of sustenance.
2. You are in a busy town intersection and stumble across a coin purse. Upon inspection, it has not only coins, but cut gems inside. What would your character do?
I would seek to find out who is missing their coin purse by stopping by the nearest buildings and inquiring if anyone lost anything. They will need to describe it to me in order to get it back. If I find no owner, then I will put it to good use.
If no one seems to be missing it, I will pick it up and take it with me. I will do nothing with it until a week or so has passed. That should be plenty time for someone to put in a lost report. I will return it if the owner is found, but otherwise it has become mine.
I would speak with my superior in Steel to see what is needed to be done about this. The man was banned for a reason - they should not be allowed contact within these walls.
I will keep watch over this person to see if they meet again. After all, keeping informed is what I do. If I get the chance, I may even follow silently after the banned person, see where he goes and then report back to Shadow.
4. Your settlement leader has approached you in secret with concerns about another settlement member who he believes may be a spy. The person in question turns out to be a close friend of yours. The settlement leader asks you to keep an eye on him, report anything suspicious, and not to mention any of this conversation to your friend. What would your character do?
I would keep an eye on him as requested without saying a word. Hopefully the rumors are false as I would like to think I would know my close friends. If they are plotting against me and the Keepers, then I suppose I need to reevaluate my choice in friends.
I will say nothing to this "friend" and continue as if nothing is wrong - as far as they know anyway. I will do my best to not only watch them, but try to gain as much information as I can to prove their innocence or their guilt.
First I would wonder what I drank last night. After determining that what happened was not a hallucination, I would investigate what the crystal is. Perhaps take it to the members of Crystal and see what it is. I do not do the biddings of unknown creatures. Past experiences of doing so have led to very bad things.
I am almost curious enough to agree to meet this person just to see who it is. Without the crystal of course. It's not as if we can't attempt to duplicate it - find out what they want from it and all that.
6. You and a fellow settlement member were out patrolling. A party of Orcs ambushed the two of you. You managed to kill several and flee into the woods, but your companion is badly wounded. The settlement is a decent distance away, your friend is at least your size, and the Orcs are closing in. What would your character do?
Well, I do know a little bit of healing, and I would do as much as I could to make sure both of us get out alive. If that meant staying back to allow them more time to escape, then so be it.
I can't carry them, nor can I heal them, but I can slow the orcs down. Maybe confuse them, lead them away, something so that my companion can make it to safety.
7. You have spent twenty minutes clearing the monsters out of an area, single handed, with the intention of setting up a harvesting camp. After killing the last monster, you return to the spot where the harvesting camp can be erected, only to find someone else has planted their harvesting camp in the same spot. What would your character do?
I would have some words with this person. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, until they prove that they know I was clearing the area. Then I'll have some choice words with them. I cleared the area, it is my right to lay claim to it first.
I'm not exactly the type to go and clear a group of monsters single-handedly. I would probably wonder about the level of monsters. But if that were the case, I would let them have it, but may help myself to a few things of theirs as 'payment' for my work. They won't miss it.
8. You are searching the settlement market for a new item that you need. You see the item for sale by several merchants. One is a member of your settlement and one is a guest with permission to use the settlement market. The settlement member's price is double that of the guest. What would your character do?
I would speak with the member first to see why his price is so much higher than the other. Maybe he didn't know. If the other is undercutting however, I will still support my guild mate so long as they are not overcharging.
That will not do. I will speak to the member to see why they are charging more. If it does not make sense, I will take it up with the Guardian of Gold. If it does make sense, I will then let the Guardian of Gold know and see what we can do to make the prices a bit more fair. Market variety is good, but undercutting others is not.
I will still fight off the bandits so that I can see if this man was stealing anything from us or our allies. I will speak with him when he wakes. If he is just passing through, then I will let him go on his way. I will not pick a fight where a fight is not needed.
If I can actually take them single handedly, I would wonder about the bandits. Or maybe the poor guy they are attacking. Likely enough, he's not much of a threat. At any case, I would chase them off and poke around to see if he was stealing items or trade secrets. The latter will likely require some words with him once he is awake. But I am not one to let anyone get killed or beaten if I can do anything to stop it. Even "enemies."
10. It's time to begin training a new skill. Your settlement is short on < enter a skill you normally wouldn't think of training >, but you could also start the next tier of your favorite skill. What would your character do?
I would dip into the needed skill if it is something that I may actually like. I have an interest in many things, and trying new things sounds like fun. Otherwise I will continue doing my best to serve Steel and provide entertainment to the guild.
I suppose that depends on what that is exactly. I deal in the trade business, be it shadows or not. I can't say I have much skill in anything else, and I'd rather be the best I can for what niche I am in.

1. You are out hunting for a much needed meal. You enter a small clearing and spy a deer. The deer is a female and this is the season for birthing fawns, but you cannot tell from this distance if she is a nursing mother or not. What would your character do? I cannot eat a deer all by myself, and the Ring of Wood is better suited to hunting for the larger game to feed a larger party, I keep hunting for rabbits and game birds. 2. You are in a busy town intersection and stumble across a coin purse. Upon inspection, it has not only coins, but cut gems inside. What would your character do? I pick it up and report it, if nobody claims it I'd keep the coins and turn the gems over to our jewel crafters. I'd report what I saw, but keep an open mind, it could be he had good reason to associate with the individual. I'd keep an eye on him, but also inform the leader that I doubted he would be a spy and mention my friendship with him and allow the leader to assign some one else if he desires. The item is obviously magical in nature and I turn it over to the Ring of Crystal for examination. 6. You and a fellow settlement member were out patrolling. A party of Orcs ambushed the two of you. You managed to kill several and flee into the woods, but your companion is badly wounded. The settlement is a decent distance away, your friend is at least your size, and the Orcs are closing in. What would your character do? I send out a message for assistance and find a defensible location while I wait for backup. 7. You have spent twenty minutes clearing the monsters out of an area, single handed, with the intention of setting up a harvesting camp. After killing the last monster, you return to the spot where the harvesting camp can be erected, only to find someone else has planted their harvesting camp in the same spot. What would your character do? Depending on if I think the group can be reasoned with I either call in the Ring of Gold, or the Ring of Steel. One of them should be able to handle the situation better then I. 8. You are searching the settlement market for a new item that you need. You see the item for sale by several merchants. One is a member of your settlement and one is a guest with permission to use the settlement market. The settlement member's price is double that of the guest. What would your character do? I inform the settlement member of the guest undercutting his prices and allow him to find a solution. If I need the item right away and the price is a factor, I'll buy the cheaper one, but if I have enough excess funds I'd rather buy from the settlement member. I may also report the guest to the ring of shadows for investigation of being a fence for bandits. While they are not likely working for our settlement, I would give the bandits an opportunity to identify themselves as friend or foe. If they are foes, they die. As for the member of the warring settlement, I'd turn him over to a member of the Ring of Shadows. 10. It's time to begin training a new skill. Your settlement is short on < enter a skill you normally wouldn't think of training >, but you could also start the next tier of your favorite skill. What would your character do? I continue my current training, we can always barter the resources I pull in for the skills we lack. 1. You are out hunting for a much needed meal. You enter a small clearing and spy a deer. The deer is a female and this is the season for birthing fawns, but you cannot tell from this distance if she is a nursing mother or not. What would your character do? Meat is not on the menu so my search for a meal would continue. Though I will not stop Baern from filling his belly if he truly felt the need to hunt. If he ever doesn't finish a kill completely I will do my duty to make the most use of what is left. If he does take down a nursing doe, such is the way of nature.2. You are in a busy town intersection and stumble across a coin purse. Upon inspection, it has not only coins, but cut gems inside. What would your character do? Sigh. People get so worked up over these scraps of earth. This could quickly become tedious. I would use my keen ears and eyes to attempt to notice any kind of disturbance nearby, perhaps someone will be ranting about accursed pickpockets, though I will not dedicate time to traveling the whole town looking for such an occurrence. If that fails to produce a lead I would ask Baern if he would be willing to try and catch a scent, if his interest is peaked I might as well follow him. If not perhaps the Cirlce of Light would be more willing to put in the effort to do the "right" thing, or perhaps just put the coin to use. Sigh. These things can be so tedious. Greatly depends on what the fellow was banned for. Generally though I would assume good intentions and simply make a mental note of the interaction. I would certainly mention to a Keeper of Steel my concerns about our walls being easily scaled. I would hope to have a great amount of trust and respect in my leader. Therefore I would hope I would not be asked to do such a thing without good reason. I would not mention anything to my friend, and I would watch them especially closely. Not just to look for evidence of spy activities, but also if it appears to be a frame or if something happens that someone might be easily misinterpreting. I would also inform my leader of my potential for bias due to our close relationship.5. Immediately wrap the crystal in a cloth and make haste to the Cirlce of Crystal. I do not assume to know enough about such things, but certainly know enough to feel a sense of danger and concern at such an event.6. You and a fellow settlement member were out patrolling. A party of Orcs ambushed the two of you. You managed to kill several and flee into the woods, but your companion is badly wounded. The settlement is a decent distance away, your friend is at least your size, and the Orcs are closing in. What would your character do? I would attempt as much quick healing as I could, it depends on what kind of healing magic I have left in that day. But my first reaction would be to heal so we had a better chance at fleeing.7. You have spent twenty minutes clearing the monsters out of an area, single handed, with the intention of setting up a harvesting camp. After killing the last monster, you return to the spot where the harvesting camp can be erected, only to find someone else has planted their harvesting camp in the same spot. What would your character do? Kindly ask that they relocate as I had just done all the work. If they simply laugh in my face it would depend on how badly my people need said resource. If we were in dire need I would attempt all diplomatic routes before drawing my bow, though I do not think myself that strong in talking someone down. If it is a resource we can easily acquire elsewhere I will move on. Yet not before making a strong mental image of the thief and later describing them to my companions of Gold. Perhaps they can punish the thief diplomatically or economically. Perhaps it is worth no effort at all. 8. You are searching the settlement market for a new item that you need. You see the item for sale by several merchants. One is a member of your settlement and one is a guest with permission to use the settlement market. The settlement member's price is double that of the guest. What would your character do? Sigh. Again with the tedious coin. I would approach my fellow settlement member and ask if we could work out a barter trade for the item I need. If they are unwilling or just unfriendly I would wish them a good day and move to deal with the guest merchant.9. Wars with settlements come and go, but bandits are always scum. I would swiftly dispatch the bandits and then keep my bow trained on the enemy telling him to gather only what belongs to him and flee. The chance of him being preyed upon in his weakened state is high, but such is the way of nature.10. It's time to begin training a new skill. Your settlement is short on < enter a skill you normally wouldn't think of training >, but you could also start the next tier of your favorite skill. What would your character do? I will train in my favorite skill. I can contribute best to my settlement by being myself to the best of my abilitiesRead more: www.keepersofthecircle.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=187#ixzz2cWpzNPvL
