I wasn't sure that the welcome post was the right place to have a chat so thought we might find a more general thread useful. I currently play Lord of the Rings Online and previously played Eve Online and Ultima Online fairly seriously. I also played dozens of other MMOs enough to get a flavour and decide they weren't for me. I still mourn WISH which looked like it was going to be the ideal MMO for me before they pulled the plug. I backed the kickstarter for Pathfinder and am currently watching it avidly hoping that it meets it's target, along with half the community I expect. This group looks like the kind of place I'd be at home. I am looking for somewhere that doesn't demand more from me that I can provide - I am always happy to help out with things but can't often make scheduled group events due to erratic play hours. From the early days of Ultima Online I have always played a very similar character in whatever MMO I play. I usually lean towards the magical/mystical and am usually recognisable as a balding, grey-haired gentleman in a blue robe. Expect to see a character called Rufus or something similar that looks a lot like this when Pathfinder Online starts up I don't play Pathfinder p&p. I mostly play Traveller but have played many different RPGs over the years although I am currently taking a three month break because I signed up for a three-month bookbinding course which clashes with my regular games night. I am based in the UK on the outskirts of London. Ruf

Having a chat here is a good idea. I should have thought of this! I played a little bit (a very little bit) of EVE and loved it. How do you like LOTRO? What did they do right/wrong, and what lessons would you like to see applied to PFO? Trust me, your involvement here is entirely up to you - the current vision is that each Ring will produce a list of missions/needs and members will volunteer to fill them. We won't be telling you "BE ONLINE AT 1700 CST OR ELSE" or anything silly like that. The idea overall is steady, slow growth - build a community, build a settlement or twelve, work towards improvement personally and as a faction. We're a group of individuals. I'd be loathe to force things on you that you don't want. I completely understand erratic hours - I've got school (on and off line) and I work full time. So between work, school, PNP campaigns, and my lovely lady, my time slots get pretty erratic themselves. Hopefully, some of that will calm down by next summer. =] I'm looking forward to seeing you in-game! Hopefully we can all group up for a dance-off or something fairly early into things. I'm so jealous of your bookbinding course! D: Braith has a friend who repairs books for the Library of Congress, and I was jealous of her too. =[ History is my first love, IT just pays the bills. I lived in Beck Row (Suffolk) from 1995-2001. I miss England dearly. I'm now just east of St. Louis MO in the US. We got some sad snow today, but mother nature is trying, I think.

What is/was good about LotRO. Well I have to say the housing was good as pretty much all the ideas I gave the devs in an article I wrote (nearly 10 years ago now!) were used ;D - that said, the idea of pre-designed villages and towns that players just rent houses in is better for a world like Middle Earth than something less strictly defined like Pathfinder. On balance, I'd like to see player-designed houses or at least some individuality in housing in Pathfinder Online. Crafting has usually been complex, varied and useful - a balance that is difficult to manage and hasn't been 100% for all crafts. The whole design of the MMO to be a series of quests that follows and accompanies the journey of the Fellowship undermines the original sandbox concept. Obviously the PvP elements leave a lot to be desired as it is essentially pointless. The amount of social and RP quests, and events was nice but I miss the bespoke events from Ultima Online and Wish where a GM manually drove senior NPCs and responded to player actions. Opportunities for characters that didn't want to fight were very limited - it pretty much assumes that crafting and exploring are adjuncts to combat, not an alternative. Again that was a step away from how Ultima Worked where you could specialist in any of the available skills - even camp-fire building if you wanted! That kind of character development that gives options other than fight, fight, fight would be good to see. A world with many different types of players will feel more alive. Those are my first thoughts! Eve is/was a completely open sandbox and one thing I really liked about that game was the "security status" where you had areas that were effectively 100% safe through to areas with no law at all where most of the "good stuff" was which encouraged players to head on out into the wilds but didn't force them.
Bookbinding is very satisfying. I collect old books (17th century mainly) and so repairing them keeps me busy! Gradually collecting the tools and the confidence to do some stuff at home.
We mostly have rain in Surrey at the moment. The garden was under about 2" rain and I was beginning to worry we might need to get the sandbags out but it has subsided here now.
Look forward to chatting with you and other members more as things progress!
Ruf.

Sorry Ruf, I was busy buying a shiny new Lumia 920. <3 I'd love to see customizable buildings in PFO, but I'll settle for less at first. That can easily be a roll-out feature, I think. Definitely something I want to see in the future though! I'm hoping the player content will make up for not-as-much NPC stuff - but that's mostly up to us, the community, right? So we'd better get to it. Our (Pro Tempore) Lord Sentinel regaled me with tales of Matrix Online where they had massive GM driven events and stories for the players, and I would dearly love something similar - even if it's just a prod to get more player interaction. For example, a horde of orcs spills out of the underdark led by a GM and they actively move to start expanding into the river kingdoms. Trite, but an effective example I think. I did like EVE and the thrill of open PVP, something I'm hoping to see replicated here, maybe with less terrible people. Oooh! I'm a history geek, and my current fascination seems to be focusing 17th-19th centuries. Mostly US, but that's probably because I live here and can visit all the locations. I do seriously want to travel Europe as an adult (I did as a kid, but I missed out on a lot I would now appreciate). What books do you have in your collection? Buh, yeah, sometimes I forget how much it rains over there. I still think of "over there" as back home sometimes, but there you go. I remember East Anglia being very, very wet and overly foggy. I remember having fog delays for school, and I miss those (went to primary school rather than the -awful- military school for American kids). We look forward to chatting more with you!

I wish we had fog days for school. We had snow days but no fog days. We can get fairly dense fog here for days. Throw in some freezing temps and we get freezing fog and black ice. (No... I am not interested in weather ~sarcastic grin~)

Mmmm, ice storms. Always fun. I live in some low-lying farmland now, and when it gets foggy, MAN does it get foggy! I pull out of my driveway and head on instinct and try to avoid glowing things until I make it to the highway, where I generally hope the cars in front of me all have their lights on. I leave for work before dawn, so the fog stays most of the way there. Very fun. On the other hand, summers in STL are awful. 100% humidity, 100+ F. Blech.

Yeah, I used to live in upstate New York. We got fourteen feet of snow in one night.
Sadly, I work for the government now, so we don't get days off.

I work for the Army, and unless it's too dangerous to come to work, off we go. That being said, I'm on call if my servers start crashing anyway, so it doesn't apply to me as much. =[
