Nymerias, Lorhayden: I'm beginning to think I didn't communicate the difference between Wardens and Keepers clearly enough. Please see below for my attempt at clarification. The intention initially - and that is subject to the review of everyone here - is that Keepers are the newer members - You're known as a Keeper from the day you join. To everyone outside the Circle, we're just collectively known as Keepers (unless each individual wants to make a big stink about I'M WARDEN BOB DANGIT). The Wardenship is a recognition of dedication to and responsibility within the guild. It doesn't just get handed out, but it's not terribly hard to obtain either - if you're active and participating in Guild politics and events, you're very likely to be a good candidate for a Warden. Having this two-tiered approach allows us to prevent ourselves from being outvoted by a surge of new Keepers while maintaining a low barrier of entry into the Guild. Essentially, merit trumps all. If you're a good, helpful, hard working and active (in and out of character) member, you're probably not going to be turned down. If you're rude, barely [active], or antagonistic, you can expect not to get voted in. The randomization of the selection board means you can't just figure out whose rear to kiss to gain power, you have to actively be a decent human being (at least out of character). ... Also, as far as guild power goes: Sentinel is an arbiter and goal setter - he or she is the head of the organization and can decide which direction to steer us. How well we cleave to that vision is based on the Guardians and the feelings of the guild at large. Watcher - back up Sentinel, sort of Appeals court judge for questions and issues that arise. The Watcher handles a lot of administrative stuff for the Sentinel and is good for Wardens/Guardians to lean on for help and authority. Guardians - They do for their Ring what the Sentinel does for the Circle as a whole - provide guidance, direction, and administrative work to keep things flowing smoothly. Wardens - Get a DIRECT vote in Circle business (ie, do we raise taxes? Do we go to war?) and provide input to everything and anything. Warden is a position that denotes experience and trustworthiness. Keepers - newer or less active members who may add input/criticism at any time and will participate in open polls (such as on the forums) to get a feel for how things are proceeding, but do NOT receive a direct vote. Typically, a Keeper has been a member for 3-6 months, more or less depending on activity and reputation. Initiates - new members who have not been confirmed (however we decide to do that). See that thread for developing information. Once we hammer it all out, I'll post a sticky detailing it all more precisely than is currently available.

Hrod part of my general misunderstanding is in the first line. "You're known as a Keeper from the day you join." .... "Initiates - New members who have not been confirmed"

Initiates were not initially part of the write up, they are a suggestion that carries quite a bit of weight - and we haven't voted/decided on them being an official part of the structure yet. It might be that you have to pass through the Initiate phase before you become a full fledged Keeper, or it might be that you Officially become a Keeper but don't get X items/full privileges until you've attained full Keeper status. Or the requirement could go away, if the Circle so chooses.

From the way the devs have talked about resource gathering thus far, I'm pretty excited about how it is going to go down.
I think an important job of the Striders, with perhaps some Shadow friends along, will be scouting the wilderness areas we claim as "ours" to find potential gathering camps, as well as others who have set up camps in "our" woods.

It seems to me like there is significant overlap in harvesting items between earth and wood. What we might want to do is create an unofficial natural harvesting group (for herbs, surface ores, et cetera) that has members of earth and wood together to coordinate where it is most efficient to have who harvesting where. In my own mind I imagine wood harvesting naturally occurring plants and tracking ore locations, but structured farming and mines would be earth. So wood would focus on low volume/low impact and earth would be higher volume and higher impact.
That is thinking realistically though. I don't know if there will be a big difference between the two in the game mechanically.

The way they have initially explained harvesting (of course it is subject to change) is that all harvesting is basically the same. Someone finds some stuff to harvest. We build a camp around it to harvest the material, be it gold, saffron, mint, poplar trees..., monsters come and attack us, we defend against them, peasants harvest, peasants run away when attacked, the harvested material runs out and we break camp and take it back to base. If foraging for plants was mechanically different, in game, then I might agree that the Ring of Wood might have that, but as of now, that's not the plan. Earth will already have the knowledge and expertise to build these camps and to control the peasants for harvesting. Do we need to have a second Ring focus on something that is the main focus of another Ring? Another thought is that the Ring of Earth is quite small. To take an aspect of theirs would swell the, already large, Ring of Wood and possibly shrink the already small Ring of Earth. thoughts?

From what I envisioned of harvesting is that Earth would be investing the skill training time to improving the camp construction and peasant efficiency etc. Wood will be working to find excellent locations and holding off monsters, whether through killing them or potentially pacifying hostile creatures. So we would spend time on stealth, perception, charm plant and animal, and combat skills.
I'm not sure how they are envisioning the collection of pelts via a camp. Or if that might be something we just collect while we are out and give to Earth or Iron. There could be a "hunters camp" though.

Now I'm picturing you guys setting up a Hunting Lodge and leading citybound folk through the woods hunting.

Nymerias, that is exactly what I imagine. Dario, I'd vacation at a Wood Hunting Lodge. It'll be like roughing it. How quaint.

Are you tired of your day-to-day grind in the city? Are you begining to loathe the noise and bustle? Looking to get away and change it up?
Hi, I'm Calhoun Farstrider, Warden of Wood, and I have your solution. This is my hunting camp. For a very low fee, you can do what I do. Come hang out with me and my brothers and sisters of Wood. During your stay, you'll learn to survive and thrive in the wilderness. Hunting, trapping, fishing, fire building, canoeing, shelter construction, and much more will all be skills taught to you while you're here.
Not wanting to come alone? That's fine! The more the merrier we say! Bring a friend or bring several! All groups of 3-5 get a 15% discount and all groups of 6+ get a 30% discount on their fee.
To learn more, ask any Keeper of the Circle to direct you to the nearest Keeper of Wood. The Keeper of Wood will be able to direct to the nearest Keeper Hunting Camp. Safe travels my friend.

"No... no sir. Sir, please do not point the crossbow at your friend's face. Sir. Sir, put the crossbow down." *twang* "Well done, sir. Someone get a cleric."

The collection of resources in Wood and Earth interests me. I've always been a gatherer.

And when I say that the harvesting of all goods should be under the Aegis of the Ring of Earth, I'm not saying that members of other Rings can't harvest, I'm just saying that those that choose to also have a connection to the Ring of Earth. A Whisperer who forages for mushrooms is a Warden of Wood and Keeper of Earth. A Wolf Pack who part-times with Hrod's Lions is a Warden of Wood and Keeper of Steel.

I would like a character that can funtion that's just a member of one Ring. Then again I made this thread to clear up who will harvest what. As a note about the Ring of Earth, as far as I know it controls all of the building (and maybe maintenence) of the entire Circle. I remains to be seen how big of an endeaver that will be. It could be substancial or not, it depends on the details. For example the city streets could be maintained by the Ring of Earth and the roads between settlements could be a several Ring affair. Having the Ring of Earth control all of that and all harvesting might or might not be possible, I think we need more info. Edit: I'm also guessing you disagree with my proposal that harvesting be split among several Rings. Did you not see that I made this proposal?
