The idea of being in a ring should never be viewed as restrictive. Being a member of the ring of Wood would not prevent you from harvesting anymore than not being a member of Gold would prevent you from selling things. When discussing purviews of any given Ring, they should be viewed only as the focus of that Ring. That Ring is not confined to only that activity, nor is someone not in that ring prevented from undertaking any such activity.

Gin "A Whisperer who forages for mushrooms is a Warden of Wood and Keeper of Earth." From this I believe that Gin is suggesting that to gather resources a member HAS to be a Keeper of Earth.

I disagree with that, if it is indeed the intent of his post - what Ring you choose is your main focus - if I wanted to belong to Steel but also forage from time to time, I shouldn't have to answer to anyone for that. If I want to take advantage of all the benefits being in Earth offers (expeditions, organized protection, mass operations), then I should join Earth. But if I just want to explore a bit and forage, I should be able to do that on my own time and my own discretion.

No, what I'm saying is that foraging, mining and other resource gathering that is not killing creatures should be under the Ring of Earth's purview. I don't believe that building things and resource gathering will take up so much time that the resource gathering should be split up... if it turns out that it is then splitting up the resource gathering could be looked at... once the game starts. My thought is that the Ring of Earth is the smallest ring we have... that and Iron. So if you take away aspects of it and give it to other Rings, Rings that are already huge in comparison, makes people not want to join the Ring of Earth and makes it obsolete. The Ring of Wood has much to do, Nature magic, hunting, tracking, scouting, protection, adventuring... does it really need to take something away from a Ring that only has 2 responsibilities?

I couldn't agree more with both of those points. Ring membership is chosen by the Keeper. Not assigned. If I happen upon a few Keepers of Steel fighting off some goblins, I'm not going to tell them that they're SOL because I'm not a Keeper of Steel. Also, if gathering does turn out to be a big and time consuming job, I would like to see the Ring of Earth to rule over all of it's operations. I'd like to see more Earth and Iron. And I totally expected Steel to have the majority of members. I'm waiting for somebody to play the "Swords into Plows" character, straddling the Rings of Earth and Steel.

That character's pretty easy to do because protection of the harvesting camps will be a big part of harvesting.

Many of the things the Ring of Wood does other Rings do too. Tracking, scouting and even hunting will likely be done in the Ring of Shadow. Adventuring is something that most Rings will do IMO. Protection is a part of both Steel and Light. I think that there's more than 2 things for the Ring of Earth to do. I'll try to give it some thought.

@ Gin: here's a thought for more Ring of Earth involvement.
There will be 3 steps to item production: Harvesting, Processing, and Crafting.
The processing stage of production could be quite extensive, it's hard to say how extensive though. It could require a substantial investment in training and time, or not. Either way the Ring of Earth will probably be a pemier processing Ring converting raw materials into more valuble ones for sale or further processing.
Maybe a whole new discussion on Processing in the Circle is required, or not.

Maybe there will be a need for processing discussion... when Goblinworks gives us info on processing. Until then, we're just flapping our gums
Edit: rereading this, it sounded harsh. I didn't mean to sound flippant or dismissive

I didn't mean to sound flippant or dismissive You're fine Gin. I understood your meaning. I agree though, A discussion on their boards would be better served than us discussing it here. The overall theme of this discussion is how harvesting is to be done by the Circle. I guess that it would be best to change the title to Harvesting in the Circle and moving it to Guild Discussion. In the opening post I proposed splitting the responsibility of harvesting between several Rings. Gin proposed that all harvesting be done by the Ring of Earth, noting that it had only 2 responsibilities (harvesting and building from what I can tell). I noted that the Ring of Earth had other responsibilities too, and gave resource processing as an example. The thing is, the responsibilities of the Ring of Earth are on subject here because Gin's claim to all harvesting based on the scope of that Ring. I believe Gin feels the Ring of Earth will be trivialized if it doesn't controll all harvesting. I feel that harvesting for the entire Circle may be too much for one Ring. As more of the game is revealed the picture of how to harvest will become clearer I'm sure.
