Based on the explaination of the Land Rush thread, it's a safe bet that we'll have some sort of encampment (that will grow into a proper settlement) that will start as being just ours.
There's a lot of speculation among the playerbase (I haven't seen anything confirming from the devs, but I could easily have missed it) suggesting that a settlement will belong to an organization, but can allow individuals outside that organization to settle there. It's entirely possible that over time, as diplomatic relationships grow, you'll see embassies and envoys popping up, until the more developed settlements do, indeed, contain representation from multiple guilds.

There was mention of NPC settlements too if I recall? I could have imagined it from an official source though, so take that with a grain of salt . But I thought I read somewhere that there will be starter towns for the newbies that are not necessarily Player run.

I believe the only NPC settlements are going to be the three starting towns. Ft. Riverwatch, Ft. Inevitable, and Thornkeep.

I'm pretty sure the devs will get mad if we try to claim their settlements. Also, their seige engines are bigger than ours. =P

It is safe to assume we will have 1 settlement to call our own, only because of the Land Rush promotion. We will be "given" one hex to call our own with either a bare-bones settlement built on it or just a guild hall, it isn't really clear.
Where we take it from there is open. I believe the idea is that several Chartered Companies can call one settlement home. After open enrollment a Chartered Company isn't going to be required to build their own settlement. If we get along they can set up base within our physical town without being members of our organization.

Only because I don't have my own brand of booze to drink kept in their Vosks. Just see what happens if Vosk Inevitable has Gottfrei Mead in their cellars and won't sell it.

You just reminded me how pointy and blue the members list is.... Is there an Amazon inspired culture in the Pathfinder world?

I resent the implication that I care only for such simple and shallow pleasures. Everyone knows I read once a week.
Grom: You read about *yourself* once a week. Hrod: Shut up, lizardface. Grom: *Ponders, tapping his clawed finger against his chin* Hrod: I mean, "Oh, great and powerful mage, spare me your anger!" Grom: *Magic taser* Hrod: I LOVE IT! MOOOOOORRRRRRRRREEEE!!!
Crwydryn: I am only involved with these two because *Points at Mike* he made all of us. I want nothing to do with them. Keep me out of it. Tawelwch: Agreed.

The Mwangi Expanse isn't real. It's just a place Scientologists created so they could keep their dream of Battlefield:Earth alive.

According to Goblinworks' blogs they intented the exact opposite. A Chartered Company "belongs" to a settlement. They intend that, to be able to form a Chartered Company, you must have the backing of a settlement. This probably won't be implemented until sometime after starting, but, there ya go. That isn't to say that we won't be starting a "guild" settlement. We will. The first player settlements will probably be Guild created ones.
