Well, I think you've hit on a different subject from hunger/thirst. There's individual "You are out of food and drink." and there's managing resources for your settlement. I like the idea of settlement level food stores, but less so at a player level.

What about armies in the field, sieges, etc? Should those also need food supplies (perhaps for some efficiency bonus)? I have no problems with handwaving away the need to eat on a character to character basis, but warfare for and against agriculture/foodstuffs has always been an integral part of large scale military struggle. The Hundred Years War is a fantastic example of economic warfare, as is the latter part of the US Civil War and about a hundred other conflicts.

I think there should be a hunger mechanic both for PCs and NPCs. I won't be hurt if it doesn't exist, especially right away, but its important, especially for war logistics, and settlement happiness. I think they will have it.

Even though Ryan mentioned that food/drink scares him, I bet the rest of the Devs aren't frightened by a rack of mammoth ribs or saber toothed loin chops! . I figure we will see food and drink in the game. I don't know if it'll be required to eat, I'll accept it either way. But large scale combat should see food and drink added to their options. I say this because Ryan talked about adding a fatigue mechanism to unit combat, requiring soldiers that died or have been in combat for a while would have to recover somewhat before rejoining the fight. Food and drink at this point would be real useful. Also I think the Devs liked the idea about settlement morale and efficiency being altered by the quality and type of food and drink you supply them with. So I wouldn't be surprised to see that added to the game.
